Hat on the Ridge: A Unique Residence and Gallery

An Innovative Design by Kiyotoshi Mori and Natsuko Kawamura

The design of the Hat on the Ridge is truly one-of-a-kind. By removing the soft sediments over the surface and placing the foundation directly on the bedrock, the architects have created a semi-subterranean-like space that appears to be buried in the earth. This unique concept allows the building to blend effortlessly with its natural surroundings.

One of the standout features of the Hat on the Ridge is its earthen floor, which connects with the bedrock. The square roof, on the other hand, opens up to the breathtaking landscape. The roof is designed in a way that it lowers down towards the roof edge and heightens up in the center. Each of the four edges of the roof offers a different view - the mountain, the valley, the village, and the sky. This thoughtful design allows the residents to experience the beauty of their surroundings from every angle.

The Hat on the Ridge is not just visually stunning; it also offers a functional and versatile living space. The roof edges can be flipped up, creating four different spaces with unique views. Additionally, the upper level floor is cut through in the corners, connecting the two levels seamlessly. This innovative design allows for a smooth interaction between the different areas of the house.

Constructed using wood, the Hat on the Ridge stands as a testament to the architects' technical prowess. The dimensions of the building are 6825mm in width, 6825mm in depth, and 6970mm in height. The construction of this remarkable residence and gallery began in September 2018 and was completed in May 2019 in Kamakura, Japan.

The Hat on the Ridge has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.
